A recent Reddit post declared, “Hair growth oils don’t grow your hair,” while another one declared “Hair growth oils has black people in a choke hold.”
While those statements reflect a growing frustration in the natural hair space with overhyped products, it’s not entirely true and definitely not the full story.
To be clear, not all oils stimulate growth, but some absolutely can and do when used properly and consistently.
So instead of throwing out oils altogether, let’s talk about what they actually do, which ones have real evidence or long-standing use, and how to use them effectively for real results.

What Most “Hair Growth Oils” Actually Do
Many so-called “growth oils” on the market are really sealing oils. They don’t grow hair, but they help retain it by reducing breakage and dryness. These oils:-
- Seal in moisture when applied after water or water-based products.
- Soften and lubricate strands.
- Protect ends and reduce split ends.
- Soothe dry scalps and flakiness.
The result? Better length retention, which can make hair appear to grow faster, even though no new hair growth is being stimulated at the root.
Oils That Do Support Hair Growth
Here’s where the myth needs to be corrected.
Some oils, including both carrier oils and essential oils, have shown potential for stimulating hair growth, improving scalp health, and supporting thicker, fuller hair.
I used a combination of these oils and other methods to regrow my edges after overly tight braids snatched my edges right out!
So, please do not discard all your carrier and essential oils due to misinformation.
Carrier Oils That Support Hair Growth
These base oils nourish the scalp, reduce inflammation, and create an ideal environment for follicles to thrive.

Pumpkin Seed Oil
- Backed by clinical studies for improving hair count (especially in androgenic hair loss).
- Believed to block DHT, a hormone linked to hair thinning.
Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO)
- Rich in ricinoleic acid, which promotes circulation and scalp health.
- Known for thickening edges and improving density.
Carrot Oil
- High in beta-carotene and vitamin A.
- Antioxidant-rich and supports cell turnover in the scalp.
Karkar Oil
- A traditional Sudanese blend, often made with sesame oil, animal fat, and cloves.
- Known to strengthen hair and restore growth from breakage or thinning.
Emu Oil
- Deeply penetrating and anti-inflammatory.
- Some early studies suggest it stimulates follicle activity and aids regrowth.
Fenugreek Oil
- Infused from fenugreek seeds; high in protein and nicotinic acid.
- Used in Ayurveda for stimulating growth and reducing hair fall.
Amla Oil
- An Ayurvedic staple rich in vitamin C and antioxidants.
- Promotes shine, scalp circulation, and may delay graying.
Mustard Oil
- Warms the scalp and encourages blood flow.
- Used traditionally to promote hair thickening and regrowth.
Neem Oil
- Improves scalp conditions such as dandruff and inflammation.
- Antifungal and antibacterial, which is great for healthy follicles.
Essential Oils That Stimulate Growth
Essential oils are potent plant extracts that can boost your scalp routine. They must be diluted in a carrier oil before applying.

Rosemary Oil
- One of the most studied oils for hair growth.
- Shown to perform similarly to minoxidil (Rogaine) in clinical trials.
Peppermint Oil
- Increases blood flow to the scalp and promotes follicle stimulation.
- Cooling and refreshing. Great for scalp massages.
Lavender Oil
- Encourages hair growth and helps reduce inflammation.
- Also great for reducing scalp tension and stress-related shedding.
Tea Tree Oil
- Powerful antimicrobial oil that helps unblock follicles.
- Useful for dandruff and itchy scalp issues that hinder growth.
Eucalyptus Oil
- Stimulates scalp and may improve hair density over time.
- Energizing scent and great for oily scalps.
Cedarwood Oil
- Balances scalp oil production and may reduce shedding.
- Often used in hair aromatherapy blends.
Why the Myth Exists: “Hair Growth Oils Don’t Work”
The myth persists because many people:-
- Use oils on dry, unwashed hair.
- Buy blends with no proven ingredients.
- Expect fast results without a consistent routine.
- Don’t combine oil use with other best hair care practices such as proper hydration, scalp care, and massages.
So yes, many “growth oils” are ineffective, but that’s not the same as saying all oils don’t work.
How to Use Hair Growth Oils for Best Results
- Apply to a clean, moisturized scalp.
- Use regularly (2 to 3 times/week minimum).
- Massage gently to stimulate circulation.
- Combine with a healthy routine (hydration, protective styles, minimal stress, etc).
- Be patient and consistent. Results take time! It took me about 6 months to start seeing real results and 12 months before my edges fully grew back.
Not every oil will make your hair grow, but some truly can, especially when used intentionally.
Oils like pumpkin seed, JBCO, carrot, karkar, emu, and powerful essential oils like rosemary and peppermint all have unique benefits for your scalp and follicles.
So don’t toss your oils just yet. Just choose wisely, use correctly, and stay consistent.
